Work does not end when the logo is delivered; it really begins there. The mark has to be handed to the print house, to whoever builds the site, to whoever runs social media and to whoever orders the business cards. If each of them uses it as they see fit, within a few months the same company has five different appearances. A brand book prevents that.
A brand book is not an attractive album — it is a set of rules explaining where the logo goes, at what size and on what background.
What goes inside a brand book?
A brand book contains this: primary and secondary logo versions, minimum size, clear space around the logo, which version to use on which backgrounds, colour values for print and screen, the typeface family, and size ratios. These are not matters of taste—they are measurable rules.
It also states what is prohibited
In practice, this is the most useful section: stretching the mark, changing its colour, adding a shadow, placing it directly over an image and separating its elements. If these restrictions are not written down, each of these will happen sooner or later.
Application examples
Business cards, letterheads, envelopes, folders, social media templates, uniforms, and vehicles show how the mark works on real applications. This section serves as a reference both for the client and for contractors who join the work later.
Who uses it
A brand book is written not for the designer, but for the company itself. The print shop, printing house, website team, and marketing employee all use the same file. That is why the language should be simple and the files should be provided in ready-to-use formats.
Does a small company need it
There is no need for a hundred-page document. A short set of guidelines spanning a few pages — variations, colours, spacing and restrictions — fully meets a small company's needs and can be expanded in the future.
The purpose of a brand book is not to restrict creativity, but to make consistency possible. When the mark looks the same everywhere, recognition builds naturally.
