SMM (social media marketing) means presenting a business on social media in a planned and measurable way. An SMM service is not a single post but a sequence of tasks: deciding what to say, turning it into visuals and copy, getting it to the right audience and measuring the result.

An SMM service is planned management of a social media page: strategy, content plan, design, posting, community replies, advertising and reporting.

What work does an SMM service include?

Usually five kinds of work: strategy, a content plan, preparing visuals and copy, posting and community management, and advertising with reporting. Strategy defines who the page speaks to and what it says; the content plan breaks that into monthly topics; the remaining stages carry out the plan and check the result. When one of these parts is missing, the page ends up either active but aimless, or polished but unseen.

Strategy: who we speak to and what we say

Strategy sets down in writing who the audience is, what question they arrive with and what the business offers them. The tone is decided here too: formal, friendly or explanatory. On a page run without a strategy every post is a separate decision, and the page never looks like one whole.

Content plan and production

Topics go into a monthly plan and are agreed before anything is posted. Visual templates are built on the brand identity — colour, type and composition should be recognisable in every post. Photo and video are planned as a separate piece of work, because the quality of a post often depends on the shot.

Posting, conversation and advertising

Posts go out on schedule, and comments and messages get answered — social media is not a one-way notice board. Advertising is a separate tool: paid placement lets you choose the audience by age, location and interests, and reaches people that ordinary posts do not.

How to measure the result

Follower count on its own is not a measure. What should be measured is how many people the posts reach, how much interaction they create, what an enquiry costs through advertising, and whether people move from the page to the website or to a message. A monthly report compares these numbers with the previous month.

When choosing an SMM service, asking what purpose the posts serve and how the result is measured gives a more precise answer than asking how many posts you get per month.
