When is rebranding necessary?

A rebranding conversation usually starts with the sentence "the logo is dated". But in brand identity a sense of datedness is not a reason on its own — the mark that bores you today is the one that carries recognition tomorrow. The decision needs a different question: has the company itself changed?

Changing a logo is not rebranding. The decision should follow from how the company's work has changed, not from taste.

When is rebranding necessary?

Rebranding is necessary when a company's activities change: if it has moved in a new direction, its audience has changed, or several activities need to be brought together under one umbrella, the old identity no longer represents the new business. This is the clearest reason for rebranding because the problem is not aesthetic but related to substance.

When the name and symbol do not match

If the symbol points to one field and the name to another, visitors have to reconcile them every time. The same problem arises when a company is known by an abbreviated name but its official name is written differently.

Technical reasons

Sometimes the brand identity is sound but cannot be used effectively: the mark becomes illegible when reduced, disappears in a single colour, is not visible on a dark background, or has no separate versions for print and screen. In this case, organising the identity is sufficient; a complete rebrand is not necessary.

What rebranding includes

Not just the logo: the colour palette, typeface, usage guidelines, print set, social media templates and website appearance. If one of these changes while the rest remain outdated, the result is not a refresh but an inconsistency.

When it is not needed

If sales have declined, the reason is often not the brand identity. Changing the logo does not conceal a problem with the market, service, or pricing—it simply resets brand recognition. In such a case, you need to identify the cause first and then look at the brand identity.

Rebranding is justified when a company's work changes. If it has not changed, organising the existing identity — documenting usage rules and completing the variants — is both cheaper and less risky.
